CLEAN VITAMIN C + Uptake Blend
Supplement details
Product Name: Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)
9 Parts Vitamin C 1 Part Uptake Blend
Scientific Name: (5R)-[(1S)-1,2-Dihydroxyethyl]-3,4-dihydroxyfuran-2(5H)-one
Other Known Names: Ascorbic acid, anti-scorbutic agent, sodium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate, dehydroascorbic acid,
What is it? Vitamin C - ascorbic acid, lab-made
Pure L-ascorbic acid, the same molecule that's in an orange or an acerola berry, made by fermentation and chemical conversion of glucose rather than extracted from fruit. Chemically there is no difference between "natural" and "synthetic" vitamin C - it's C₆H₈O₆ either way, and your body cannot tell them apart.
What synthesis gives you is quantity: this capsule has 859 mg, about seven times what our acerola capsule carries, because you can't get that much C from fruit into a single capsule without a bucket of fruit sugar coming with it. That's why we sell both. If you want vitamin C as it comes in food, with the fruit around it, buy the acerola; if you want a big dose of the pure molecule, this is that.
Why the name. Ascorbic means anti-scurvy - a-scorbutus. It's the "L" form because the mirror-image molecule, D-ascorbic acid, does nothing useful in humans. "Vitamin C" is just the third letter in the sequence of discovery.
How long people have used it. As a pure substance, since 1933. Szent-Györgyi isolated it in 1928 from paprika and adrenal glands; Norman Haworth in Birmingham worked out its structure in 1933 and got the Nobel for chemistry in 1937, the same year Szent-Györgyi got the one for medicine; and Tadeusz Reichstein in Zürich published the synthesis route the same year.
Who used it. Everyone, once it was cheap. But the person this page owes a name to is Linus Pauling, the American chemist who won two unshared Nobel Prizes, one for chemistry in 1954 and the peace prize in 1962, and who spent the last twenty-five years of his life arguing that people should take vitamin C in grams a day rather than milligrams.
His 1970 book Vitamin C and the Common Cold sold in the millions and started an argument between him and the medical establishment that hasn't fully finished.
Robert Cathcart, a Californian orthopaedic surgeon, followed with a dosing method in the 1980s that a certain kind of reader will already know. Irwin Stone, the biochemist who put Pauling onto vitamin C in the first place, wrote The Healing Factor in 1972.
Those three books are the ones people mean when they talk about "high-dose vitamin C". We're not going to tell you what they say, that's not allowed in the North Korean state of the UK. But they're all in print, and PubMed has thousands of papers on the topic. Read, decide for yourself, and don't take our word or theirs for anything.
