What is it? Ecdysterone
Insects grow by shedding their skin. The chemical that tells them when to do it is called ecdysterone. Oddly, lots of plants make the exact same chemical- spinach and quinoa have a bit, and a few plants have a lot: maral root from Siberia, a Chinese herb called Cyanotis, and a plant from Uzbekistan called Ajuga. Nobody's quite sure why plants make it.
Why the name.Ecdysis is Greek for "getting out" and is the biologists' word for shedding a skin. Ecdysone was the moulting hormone; ecdysterone is its more active relative with an extra hydroxyl group at carbon 20 - hence 20-hydroxyecdysone. "Phytoecdysteroid" is the word for the plant versions.
How long people have used it. As a molecule: since 1954, when Adolf Butenandt, who'd already won a Nobel for the human sex hormones, and Peter Karlson in Munich boiled down half a tonne of silkworm pupae to get 25 milligrams of ecdysone.
The plant discovery came in 1966, twice in the same year: Koji Nakanishi in Tokyo found ecdysteroids in a Japanese conifer, and Galbraith and Horn in Melbourne found them in an Australian one, and within a decade they'd been reported in hundreds of species.
The interest in eating them is Soviet. Through the 1970s and 80s, Soviet sports scientists worked on maral root, Rhaponticum carthamoides, and its ecdysterone content, and an Uzbek institute in Tashkent turned it into a licensed product called Ecdysten around 1980; the story that it was the Eastern Bloc's edge went round Western gyms for the next thirty years, and Ajuga turkestanica - turkesterone - comes out of the same Uzbek research programme.
The West caught up properly only in 2019, when a group at the Free University of Berlin ran a study on ecdysterone that got it added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's monitoring list the following year, monitored, not banned, and it still isn't.
Who used it. In the folk sense, the peoples of the Altai and southern Siberia, who dug maral root for generations and named it after the maral deer they said pawed it up in the rut; Russian settlers and herbalists picked the habit up from them in the nineteenth century and it went into the Soviet pharmacopoeia in the 1960s.
In the modern sense: Soviet and then Russian athletes and their coaches from the 70s; East European bodybuilders in the 80s; and Western strength athletes from about 2000, largely on the strength of the rumours.
Everyone else has been eating small amounts of it in spinach without knowing. Popeye, it turns out, was onto something chemically, if not for the reason he thought.
